Alternate picking is one of the fastest ways to improve your timing, clarity, and speed on guitar. This beginner-friendly guide gives you a simple setup, 3 exercises, and a weekly practice plan.
What alternate picking means
You alternate downstrokes and upstrokes: D U D U… even when you change strings. The goal is consistent motion and even volume.
Setup checklist
Use a metronome (start slow)
Pick grip: relaxed, not clenched
Small pick motion (don’t ‘dig’ too deep)
Keep your picking hand anchored lightly if it helps
Exercise 1: One-string 8ths
Pick any note. Play 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & with strict D-U. Start at a tempo you can play perfectly.
Exercise 2: Two-string crossing
Play 4 notes on one string, then 4 notes on the next string. Keep D-U consistent.
Exercise 3: Simple scale fragment
Use a 3-notes-per-string fragment (like 5-7-8). Focus on clean string changes.
